You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”

Není to přesně anketa. It’s a lot more of a regularly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always took pleasure in reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you take pleasure in reading mine.

Your most current and greatest discovery?
These organic Corn Chip Dippers from Trader Joe’s. You can get them in the chip/snack section! They’re like the TJ’s version of Fritos, and for some reason, they exceed all normal realms of heavenly awesomeness when you have them with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Also, this Kate Spade Cobble hill small Ella cross Body Purse, which just might be the most best purse on the planet (it’s cute, incredibly soft, and can be worn cross-body or hand-held).

Would you ever dye your entire head of hair green?
Uh…probably not.

Nothing against green, because I like the color, and I’m normally adventurous when it pertains to my hair and hair color…but I’m having a hard time seeing myself as a green-haired girl.

What’s your standby/fallback snack?
A bowl of sliced fruit drizzled with a little honey, and the fruit depends on the season. ideal now I’m all about strawberries and blueberries.

What makes someone beautiful?
Nothing having to make with society. Being comfortable in your own skin and understanding who you are and loving every single part of your personality (even the messy parts) makes someone genuinely beautiful.

Road trip! You and some friends decide to drive hundreds of miles to a holiday destination. Do you take the direct route (which gets you there faster) or the picturesque route?
The direct route on the way there and the picturesque route on the way back. That way we get to the fun stuff quicker but have a lot more time to take in the view (and take a lot more pics) on the way back.

Yes, I’m THAT person.

Whatevs, I got nine hours of sleep, and it was glorious. ideal now I feel like I could nearly conquer the world! incredible what a little extra sleep can do.

I hope you had a terrific weekend. What was the highlight? Mine was meeting a three-legged cat named Ernie yesterday at the mall. His assistants (cat people, obviously) brought him along with them to do some shopping, and Ernie was absolutely cool with it! He was incredibly mellow and even let me hold him.

Ernie, unlike Tabs, enjoys leisurely window shopping. Tabs, on the other paw, always insists that I book him appointments ahead of time at Chanel, Dior, etc. so the stores can pull together outfits for him beforehand.

Hey, ladies! I know y’all are busy reclining on the rocks and beguiling sailors with your songs and whatnot, but when you have a spare minute, ideally some time before your new 32-piece Alluring Aquatic summer collection arrives on may 15, can we schedule a quick conference call?

I’d like to go over a major issue I have with the five Lipsticks, five Lipglasses and two Lip Pencils in the collection — specifically, I wish I could wear each and every one of them, like, all at the same time.

But it’s not my fault! I have a weakness for nude lips, particularly in smokey eye looks using eyeshadows in unexpected colors, like the shimmery blue, green and plum extra dimension Eye shadows from the MAC Alluring Aquatic collection.

I love the femme fatale look of glistening eyes and glossy nude lips, and I can absolutely get that by lining my lips with light nude What Comes naturally Lip Pencil before filling them in with Lustre Lipstick in siren song (a pale sheer beige) or Frost Lipstick in Pet Me, Please (a light shimmering mauve).

A layer of either the seductively sparkly clear Water or creamy nude Peachstock Lipglasses on top, and I, too, feel like a magical creature of the sea.

Ach! — and the pinks in this collection? Both neutral pink Matte Lipstick in Enchanted One and creamy rose Cremesheen Lipstick in Mystical are neutral enough to work with both warm and amazing skin tones and best for a day at the office, whether you spend said days on sea cliffs singing bewitching songs or pushing paper at your desk (damn those TPS reports!).

I like both of the lippies worn either by themselves or with a touch of light bronzy pink Water Deities Lipglass or plummy bronze Seducing sound Lipglass on top, which makes them even a lot more alluring.

And how about those big parties at the Parthenon? Well, when I need enough drama to party with Zeus and Athena, lively violet Cremsheen Lipstick in Goddess of the Sea, deep violet Lipglass in modern Lure and soft burgundy Lip Pencil in Half-Red perfectly accompany shimmery statement eyeshadows.

Thoughts on the 11 of 12 MAC Alluring Aquatic lippies I’ve tried…

Lustre Lipstick in siren Song: This sheer shimmering beige has a retro feel. Not a color I’d usually wear on its own, because I feel like the light, frosty beige by itself can look a little too stark on my tanned skin, so I like to layer it with one of the Lipglasses (particularly Peachstock). pale pretties, you could absolutely rock this! ($17.50)

Frost Lipstick in Pet Me, Please: often I have trouble with frosty lipsticks highlighting my lip flakes and lip lines, but I don’t have those issues with this shimmering mauve. It’s supernaturally smooth. ($17.50)

Matte Lipstick in Enchanted One: If you have pigmented lips like I do, this mid-toned matte just might be your best pink nude. The finish isn’t annoyingly flat, which I love, and the formula feels comfortable and non-drying. absolutely a keeper that I could wear daily. Don’t miss this one! ($17.50)

Cremesheen Lipstick in Mystical: This mid-toned creamy rose has just enough kick to stand on its own, but it’s even a lot more sensational with Seducing sound Lipglass on top. If you’re considering Mystical, consider taking the gloss home with you, také. together the two are rosy-plum-bronzy magic. ($17.50)

Lipglass in clear Water: The glitter in this shade is so bewitching that it could cause shipwrecks on account of swooning sailors. The tiny flecks of multidimensional pearl in pink, silver and purple elevate it from your average glittery gloss status to something genuinely epic. ($16.50)

Lipglass in Peachstock: I may have inadvertently applied this to my under-eye area (whoops!) because it looked like concealer in the tube. but you don’t get concealer lips when you wear this. The warm creamy nude (a true nude) looks kind of like Tom Ford’s Sable Smoke Lipstick in gloss form. Seriously frickin’ love it. ($16.50)

Lipglass in Water Deities: It’s as if this light bronzy pink is channeling NARS sweet dreams Lip Gloss. ($16.50)

Lipglass in Seducing Sound: Pigmented bronzy plum perfection. ($16.50)

Lipglass in modern Lure: If you’re gonna wear this deep violet with pink pearl, keep a lip brush and lip liner around. I don’t mind the extra work because I love how it looks in photographs, but it’s drama with a capital “D!” ($16.50)

Lip Pencil in What Comes Naturally: I line and fill in my pout with this light nude to block out the color of my pigmented lips. Smooth and comfy, this one’s really helpful when I want to wear lighter nude beige lipsticks and/or glosses. ($16.50)

Lip Pencil in Half-Red: This soft burgundy liner goes terrific with plums, bronzes and violets. As far as I can tell, it’s the only re-promoted lip product in the Alluring Aquatic collection. ($16.50)

ready to moisturize, blot and prime!
I know I say this all the time, but that’s because it’s freakin’ true! — it really does take a village, so to speak, when you’re trying to do the whole smooth/flawless skin thing, or as close as you can get to it.

Oh, my goodness, yes, it would be SO nice if it were possible to do it all in one easy step, but that hasn’t been my experience. There are lots of steps involved in getting as close as possible to perfect-looking skin for me, and it takes a lot of work, especially upfront prep work at the beginning of the process.

But here’s something that helps, and I always do it, without fail: I always apply moisturizer before my face primer.

When I do, my skin looks smoother, my makeup lasts longer, and everything I apply on top of moisturized skin just seems to work better.

I really don’t know why… maybe the moisturizer plumps the skin and makes whatever I apply on top of it look smoother. colors also look richer and more intense.

Here’s my basic process…

Step 1: Moisturize

First, I moisturize, and it’s the first step when I’m applying my makeup (before this, however, right after washing my face in the morning, I apply any skin serums and products with SPF).

My combination skin is more dry than oily (but it’s also oily on my forehead and around my nose and chin), so I reach for rich moisturizers, and I like ones that don’t contain SPF, in this case, to avoid the telltale white cast that can happen when you mix SPF-containing products and flash photography. I also like moisturizers that don’t pill or clump when I apply other products on top of them.

Once my face is fully moisturized, I give the moisturizer enough time to fully absorb and sink in, which is usually around five minutes. Note: this step is very, very important because if the moisturizer is still wet in spots, products applied on top of it won’t last as long as they should/could.

Step 2: Blot

Next, just to be safe, I’ll blot my skin with a tissue or paper towel to lift away any as yet unabsorbed moisturizer.

Step 3: Prime

Now it’s time to prime. It goes right on top of my moisturized skin, and then I also give that enough time to set (about another five minutes).

While I’m waiting, I’ll do other things, like fill in my brows, fix my hair or harass my cat.

Finally, I put on my foundation, concealer, powder and all that fun stuff.

I know it sounds like a lot work, and it is, so I don’t do it when I’m super insanely pressed for time (instead, I’ll just mist my face with Fix+ and apply primer on top), but I really do think it makes a big difference in the way my skin looks when I wear makeup.
